A few thoughts on one of the Fabrics Of The Moment!
Meaning loop or curl in French and pronounced Boo-Clay. Boucle has been popular since the 1950s when Coco Chanel changed her ubiquitous tweed styles into this soft, textured material.
Since then it has never really been out of fashion and never more ‘in’ than now.
Chanel’s fabrics have always had the mark of luxury incorporating expensive yarns of silk, pure wools, linen and metallics but we now have the technology to produce the ‘look’ at a fraction of the cost.
Boucle is manufactured by weaving with a 2 or 3 strand yarn with one of the strands being looser than the others. This strand creates the softly curled, nubby loop while the other part of the yarn gives a well-woven, firm base to the fabric.
The Chanel trend is back in force with copycat jackets being worn as formal wear right through to everyday wear with jeans.
