What Is A Fabric Fat Quarter?

Fabric Fat Quarters Explained

A Fat Quarter (FQ) refers to a special cut of fabric.

What is a fat quarter?

In essence a Fat Quarter is a piece made by cutting half a metre of the full fabric width and then cutting this piece in half vertically (essentially cutting it by the width). Fat Quarters are usually cut from quilting fabrics as they provide a smaller piece (essentially quarter of a metre) but in a way that you still get a sizeable piece of the design.

With most quilting fabric widths being 44″ / 110cms wide a Fat Quarter is therefore usually around the 50cm x 55cm mark.

Can They Be Made From Other Fabrics?

Simple answer:  Yes!

Just because FQs are usually cut from Quilting Fabrics doesn’t mean they can’t be made from other varieties. So long as it conforms to the method of cutting above any fabric can be cut to a Fat Quarter. For example a fabric that is 135cms (54″) wide would create a Fat Quarter of approx: 50cms x 67cms.
