Introducing the next evolution in the Jelly Roll Rug Technique craze - a Jelly Roll Handbag Pattern.
By RJ Designs, the pattern is for a customisable, flat bottom handbag with 3 inside pouch pockets (ideal for phone, glasses, wallet, etc.), a pen slot, zipped interior pocket for more secured items and a key-fob loop.
The bag features a magnetic closure & boasts luxurious leather handles.
The RJ Design Pattern uses a Jelly Roll & Wadding Strips (full equipment list below). For ease and accuracy make using Pre Cut Mini Wadding Rolls.

Jelly Roll Handbag Pattern
We are excited to announce the new pattern 'Jelly Roll Handbags' to carry on the phenomenal Jelly-Roll Rug Technique craze.
This version still uses a Jelly Roll BUT, the best bit, only uses 20 strips... So, from most Standard 40 Strip Jelly Rolls you can make two bags or of course use the other 20 strips (not used for a bag) in another project!
The pattern contains instructions for a bag that features, lining, internal pouch pockets, pen slot, zipped internal pocket, key fob loop and magnetic fastenings. You can of course choose to include or exclude any features you wish.
Roma was inspired to create the first rug & pattern while admiring antique rugs. Her inspiration and info in her own words below…
‘I wanted to come up with something that would be a fun sewing project for all.
After seeing the methods that were currently available, I decided that I wanted something totally different & Behold, the Jelly-Roll Rug Technique came to pass!’

- Fusible Interfacing Mid Weight. Here...
- Bag Handles 60cms Long (or make your own). Here...
- Magnetic Snap Fasteners. Here...
- 7" or Longer Zip. Here...
- Jeans Sewing Machine Needles. Here...
- Spool of 50s Weight Sewing Thread. Here...
- Best Press or Spray Starch Alternative. Here...
- You will need a sewing machine that will make at least a 5mm wide zig-zag.
- Coordinating cotton fabric/s for lining & pockets.
