Rit Colour Remover Info.
Rit Colour Remover makes it possible to remove the existing color from yet-to-be dyed fabric, giving you a dye-ready canvas for spectacular results and true color. It’s also the perfect solution for removing removing dye stains (washed by mistake with colored items) and even food stains (such as fruit juice, ketchup and tea) from whites.
Unfortunately, Colour Remover cannot remove the pattern or print from a fabric. It also cannot remove the indigo color from jeans.
Unlike traditional bleach, which contains chlorine that can damage fabric, Colour Remover is chlorine-free so that you can safely dye fabric after removing it’s color. Perfect for dye projects where you want to completely change the color of the fabric or as a pre-treatment for faded, discolored and stained fabric. It can even be used to remove dye from fabric dyed incorrectly.
Ideal for use on the following fibres/surfaces:
Cotton, Linen, Wool, Rayon
How To Use
No matter what you plan to dye the first step is to choose the right dye for your fabric or material. Always check the care label for the fibre content of the item you plan to work with.
Rit Recommend using the Oven Top method from there. However you can also use in a washing machine (see further below).
Please note the below methods are as described by the manufacturer. For further information refer to the packet and their website for info. or alternatively please feel free to contact us.
Oven Top Method
- Pre-wash item in warm, soapy water.
- Fill a stainless steel pot with enough water for the fabric to move freely. Cover pot and heat water on stove top to just below boiling (or around 200 F°).
- When water begins to simmer, add Color Remover and mix well.
- Keep temperature at a low simmer.
- Wet the item you are going to be removing the color from and add it to the bath.
- Stir occasionally. Some fabrics will lose their color in as fast as 10 minutes, others can take up to 20 minutes. Once your garment turns white or off-white, you can remove it from the bath.
- Rinse in warm water and then gradually cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.
- Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
- Item is now ready to be dyed.
Washing Machine Method (presuming front loader)
- Wet fabric and place item(s) in the washing machine.
- Set water temperature to the hottest possible setting and a wash cycle of at least 30 minutes or longer.
- Mix Color Remover with 4 cups of hot water. If you are removing color from a small load, use 2 packets of Color Remover. If you are removing color from a large load, use 3 packets of Color Remover. If you are removing color from an extra large load, use 4 packets of Color Remover.
- Start the cycle.
- Remove detergent cup from detergent tray.
- Pour the solution into the dispenser.
- Flush dispenser with 4 cups of hot water.
- Rewash item in warm water with mild detergent and dry.
- Item is now ready to be dyed.
- To clean the washing machine: Using hot water and the “high” level setting, clean the washer with 1-2 cups of liquid bleach. Make sure to wipe around the inside of the lid and pour a little bleach through the internal dispenser. Fill washer to highest water level with the hottest water temperature setting. Add detergent and 2 cups chlorine bleach and run a full wash cycle with 3 to 4 old towels.
